Towering over Bangkok: 18 photos of the largest abandoned skyscraper of the planet

In the early 1990s, Thailand was on top: the country's economy soared, and Bangkok was transforming at an incredible pace. Skyscrapers appeared in the city, and it became like a real metropolis. However, the year 1997 was very difficult for many Asian countries: the eastern crisis struck, and the economy literally collapsed. It affected Bangkok. Then there was a huge amount of unfinished, which over time finished. But not the Sathorn Unique Tower, which is standing on the banks of the Chauphray River, looking at Bangkok from above with empty window openings.

The Sathorn-Unique Tower was to become Thailand's next skyscraper. It was planned to open 600 luxury condominiums, restaurants with panoramic views, offices for large companies and a rooftop pool with views of Bangkok. The tower was built by the architect Rangsan Torsuvan, on whose account more than one building in the capital of Thailand. However, in 1993 a criminal case was brought against him. According to some reports, Torsuvan was planning the assassination of the President of the Supreme Court along with other conspirators. The attempt did not occur, but the trial dragged on for years. Since then, funding for all architect's projects has been eroded, and Sathorn Unique is no exception. Well, four years later, the crisis began, and the construction was generally frozen.

And if the rest of the unfinished Bangkok was later finally completed, then the Sathorn-Unique Tower is still dilapidated. The point is the stubbornness of Torsuvan: they offered to buy the building several times, but the architect did not want to give his brainchild at a low price, but planned to “recapture” all the invested funds. As a result, the skyscraper was never sold.

To this day, Sathorn Unique stands alone and frightening the local kids. Once it was almost finished: the frame is about 90%, and we just started to finish the interior. Today it’s difficult to get into the building, it is guarded, but this did not prevent the Sathorn Unique Tower from becoming Bangkok’s main place for base jumps and some tourists.
