Cornwall: a couple of words about King Arthur

Tintagel is one of the most beautiful old villages in Cornwall, which we dreamed of returning to for several years.

What is her secret? In the mysterious ruins of an old castle on the mountain, which, according to legend, belonged to King Arthur?

In the incredible, harsh nature of these places, where you can watch for how long the waves of the Atlantic Ocean beat against sheer cliffs?

In the tradition? Returning, I was sure that four years later we would see the same person behind the counter of the pottery shop. And so it happened.

So, the village of Tintagel. There is only one street, low houses and unusual fences made of local stone.

Pubs, hotels (usually combined), souvenir shops and small shops are scattered along the street. Everything here is subject to a single theme - King Arthur. Still would! Tourists love this legend!

We stayed in an old hotel, which belongs to the third, if not the fourth, generation of Cornish. They rent rooms and contain a pub. The pub is huge, there is enough space for everyone - and eat, and drink ale, and watch football, and listen to music from a jukebox.

One of the attractions of Tintagel is Britain's oldest operating post office.

They are proud of him and even publish on local tourist postcards. It is small, and the atmosphere of the late 19th century is perfectly preserved there.

And what a garden !!!

And we are heading to the castle. For 2 or 3 euros you can hire a car that will take you as close as possible. Pensioners actively use this service. Of course, we went on foot :)

The castle is associated with the legends of King Arthur. It is believed that it was here that his father Uther Pendragon, assuming the guise of the husband of Lady Igreina, came to her and conceived the future king. It was here, according to legend, that Arthur was born, and from here Merlin secretly took the baby away.

In 1998, in Tintagel, archaeologists found the "Arturo Stone". Experts have established that it dates from around the VI century. The inscription on the stone refers to "King of Artungu."

To this day, the castle in its original form has not been preserved. It was rebuilt several times, either due to fires, or due to natural disasters. Several times, due to landslides, the bridge and parts of the outbuildings were destroyed. All this influenced the fact that the castle was abandoned.

Surprisingly, it does not spoil it. He does not look lifeless at all, and, having reached him (and this is not easy - you will have to climb the wooden steps in the rock for a long time), you are absolutely delighted. In the castle, by the way, there are costumed performances and entertainment programs for children.

And what kinds are opening ....

But back to Tintagel. It's time to eat. While looking for a place to get a job, I photographed an advertisement for a chef :) Now we all know about the salaries of cooks!

Cornwall has a great budget lunch option - buy a Cornish pie. They are made with different fillings - with meat and vegetarian. The cake is big and very satisfying. One such is enough for half a day!

In the evenings, Tintagel’s life moves to pubs. There are many people, many come with dogs and children. A charming little girl in front of my eyes occupied a huge furry dog, and he was glad of such attention.

In the morning, a traditional breakfast. Toast and poached egg. Nothing else fit - the British have very satisfying breakfasts.
